Before setting foot in Jamaica, the mission began at home with preparation, coordination, and intention. Every item collected had a purpose — to support caregivers, strengthen care spaces, and ensure that the supplies being shared would truly meet people’s needs.
The preparation phase involved gathering hygiene products, personal care items, medical necessities, and food staples. These are everyday essentials, but in care environments — especially infirmaries supporting adults with disabilities — they are critical to maintaining dignity, comfort, and consistency. Each box packed represented thoughtfulness and responsibility, not just donation.
This stage of the mission reminded us that meaningful support starts long before arrival. It requires listening, planning, and respecting the realities of the communities we aim to support. By focusing on practical, high-impact items, we ensured that what we brought would integrate seamlessly into daily care routines rather than disrupt them.
Preparation was also about mindset. This mission wasn’t about fixing or rescuing — it was about standing alongside existing systems of care and offering support that empowers caregivers to continue their work with confidence and stability.
